Amazon's bestselling Galaxium solar eclipse glasses have risen in price as demand builds ahead of the UK's major partial solar eclipse on August 12, with packs now starting from £17.74.

With just days to go until the UK's biggest solar eclipse in a generation, demand for safe viewing glasses is continuing to build. The popular Galaxium Solar Eclipse Glasses remain an Amazon bestseller, although prices have increased since they first went on sale.

The current Amazon listing shows the 12-pack priced from £20.94, while the cheapest option is now a six-pack from £17.74. Larger family and group packs are also available, including 25 pairs for £24.95, 50 pairs for £44.99 and 100 pairs for £99.99.

The glasses are being promoted ahead of the partial solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, when the Moon will cover up to around 90% of the Sun in parts of the UK. It is expected to be the deepest eclipse visible from Britain since the famous total eclipse of 1999.

According to the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the eclipse will begin in London at around 6.17pm, reaching its maximum at approximately 7.12pm, although timings and the percentage of the Sun obscured will vary across the country. The South West and parts of western Britain are expected to enjoy the most dramatic views.

The Galaxium Solar Eclipse Glasses are advertised as meeting the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard for direct solar viewing. The manufacturer says the lenses block harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation while filtering out 99.999% of intense visible sunlight.

That certification is important because ordinary sunglasses are not safe for looking directly at the Sun. Safety advice from NASA states that eclipse viewers should always comply with the ISO 12312-2 standard and should be carefully inspected for scratches, punctures or damaged filters before every use.

Amazon shoppers have awarded the Galaxium eclipse glasses an average 4.3-star rating from more than 4,700 reviews, making them one of the platform's best-selling eclipse products ahead of next week's event.

Each pair is individually wrapped, making the packs suitable for families, schools, workplaces or groups planning to watch together. The lightweight cardboard frames are designed to fit both adults and children, although children should always be supervised when viewing the eclipse.

While the lowest-cost six-pack now offers the cheapest way to buy into the range, the 12-pack and larger bundles may represent better value for households or community groups watching together. As interest in the eclipse increases, prices and availability could continue to change before August 12.

Anyone ordering the Galaxium Solar Eclipse Glasses should always read the manufacturer's instructions before use and avoid using any pair with scratched, damaged or loose filters. Never view the Sun through cameras, binoculars or telescopes while wearing eclipse glasses unless specialist solar filters are also fitted.
