Football club near Portsmouth launches bid to turn toilet block into changing rooms

A Hampshire football club has launched a bid to upgrade its changing room facilities by taking over a disused toilet block.

Applicant Dean Button, on behalf of Fareham Town Football Club, has submitted plans to Fareham Borough Council for a change of use for a disused toilet block. He proposes to turn it into a changing room and to build a new single-storey extension to the club’s existing changing rooms.

The planning statement from Porter Robson Architecture said that the existing changing room facilities at Cams Alders Sports Stadium, Palmerston Drive, Fareham, no longer meet current Football Association and league standards.

“The improved facilities will support the growth of youth, women’s and other teams, enabling the club to expand its community programme and provide better opportunities for participation in sport for local residents,” said the statement.

The plans propose making the changing space compliant by incorporating and refurbishing the adjoining disused public toilet block into an improved, modern changing space for players, officials and staff.

Cams Alders Sports Stadium is a long-established sports facility serving Fareham and the wider area, with football and related community sports activities.

“Without investment, the club faces the potential for sanctions or relegation on ground-quality grounds rather than sporting merit,” said the statement.

The supporting statement also said the derelict toilet block, vacant for 15 years, will be brought back into use. It will create an integrated and fit-for-purpose changing facility that supports the operation and future growth of Fareham Town Football Club.

Upon completion, it will enable further much-needed investment in the club for the benefit of players, supporters and the wider community.

Planning officers will make a decision by January 14.
