Storm Dennis: Portsmouth braced for winds of up to 70mph as Met Office weather warning issued

PORTSMOUTH looks set to be battered by more adverse conditions as Met Office forecasters warn of the danger of Storm Dennis.

The weather system is expected to bring winds of up to 70mph and potentially heavy rain on Saturday, just a week after Storm Ciara’s arrival.

Portsmouth will face gales up to 20mph faster than areas inland, with potential for another weekend of unwanted disruption.

The Met Office said Storm Dennis will bring ‘small’ chances of injuries or danger to life from flying debris and damage to buildings.

It comes after Storm Ciara’s gusts ripped the roof off an apartment building in Havant Road, Drayton, and forced tenants to be evacuated.

Other potential impacts of Storm Dennis, the Met Office said, could include longer journey times, cancellations, road closures and power cuts.

It also warned mobile phone coverage could take a dive in the event of any outage.

It added: ‘There is a small chance injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.’

Dramatic pictures and video captured in Southsea and Old Portsmouth showed the drama caused by Storm Ciara on Sunday.

The weather also led to the death of a driver in Hampshire after a tree fell on to his car.
