Repair works needed for Portsmouth sea defences following Storm Jorge

A SECTION of the Southsea sea defences will need repair work after it was damaged by Storm Jorge at the weekend.

Part of the stone revetment at Long Curtain Moat was compromised as the seafront was battered by winds of around 40 miles per hour.

Engineers are looking at options to temporarily repair the revetment.

A Portsmouth City Council spokeswoman said: ‘This void is in the revetment a little further west of Spur Redoubt, in an area that is not really used by pedestrians.

‘It does not pose any immediate danger, but if we left as it is, it might get worse with any further storms coming.’

Wind gusts of up to 40mph were forecast last weekend as the Met Office issued a weather warning across the south.

Forecasters warned of potential flooding and spray from large waves, as well as travel disruption.

The windy came after two more storms hit the south coast in the last month – Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis.

The two storms caused seafront roads to be closed, bus and train services to be cancelled or diverted, and flood alerts to be issued across Hampshire.
