Several flood warnings are in place today (February 2) following last night’s downpours, including in Titchfield on the River Meon. The government alert said 35mm of rain fell yesterday causing very high water levels.
“Flooding will affect Titchfield Hill with very high water levels at Titchfield Mill, Bridge Cottage and at the Tanneries Industrial Estate,” the warning added. “Water could flow across the main road and cause flooding to the front of Bridge Cottage.”
The warning said a small amount of rain is forecast today, but more showers are expected on Tuesday which could once again raise river levels.
Warnings have also been issued for Wallington in Fareham, Wickham along the A334, areas alongside the River Hamble including Waltham Chase, Durley Mill and Botley, and sites close to the River Itchen such as Mansbridge and Woodmill.
One of the warnings urges people to stay away the seafront in the south of Hayling Island. It said: “We are liaising with emergency services and local authorities who assess beach condition.
“Activate any flood protection products you may have . Avoid South Hayling seafront. Shingle can be thrown by wind and waves.
“The shingle beach at Eastoke Corner has been impacted by high energy waves. Property at Eastoke corner, near the nature reserve, and at Southwood Road may flood. Overtopping of splash walls along the beach front may flood gardens.”
Storm Chandra hit much of the south of England yesterday, with a weather warning still covering the south west. Portsmouth and Hampshire is unaffected, with the Met Office forecasting only a small amount of rain today. A full map of flood warnings and alerts can be found here.
