The Met Office said this will have ‘widespread impacts’ on people, especially in urban areas

Sweltering temperatures are forecast over Portsmouth with the Met Office issuing a weather warning.

An amber alert for extreme heat will be in place from June 22 at 1am to 11.59pm on June 23. The forecaster said a developing hot spell will peak during that time and cause widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

“Following very warm weather on Sunday, very high temperatures are expected on Monday and Tuesday and will likely bring widespread impacts to people and infrastructure,” it added. “In addition to high daytime maxima, temperatures overnight will remain very warm, especially in larger urban areas, and it will also feel humid.

“Temperatures are likely to reach the mid-30s Celsius in places on Monday and Tuesday. Some places, particularly in urban areas, may see temperatures remain above 20 Celsius overnight. The very high temperatures may continue across a smaller area into the middle of the week, but there remains some uncertainty regarding the extent of this.”

The Met Office said water safety incidents will be more likely given that more people will be visiting coastal areas, lakes, and rivers. Vulnerable people who are sensitive to extreme heat may have adverse health effects. Sunburn, heat exhaustion, nausea, fatigue, dehydration, and other symptoms may be felt. The forecaster said heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, leading to power cuts and other service faults to home homes and businesses.

Offering public safety advice, the Met Office said: “Keep yourself safe by drinking plenty of water, keep out of the sun, and avoid any exercise between 11am-3pm when the sun is strongest. Close curtains in rooms that face the sun. If you are going out, take water with you, stay in the shade, wear sunscreen, and a wide brimmed hat.

“Help to protect vulnerable people that you know including older people, those with underlying conditions and those who live alone; they may need support to keep cool and stay hydrated. If you are worried about your health, or that of somebody you know, ring NHS 111.”

The weather warning covers Portsmouth, Gosport, Havant, Fareham, Waterlooville, Hayling Island, and the rest of Hampshire. Temperatures in Portsmouth are currently forecast to peak at 30C on Sunday, 31C on Monday, and 31C on Tuesday.
