Here are some of the changes that could be made to Portsmouth taxi ranks
CHANGES could be made to several Portsmouth taxi ranks following demands from drivers.
Members of Portsmouth City Council’s licensing team is due to consider alterations to existing ranks, as well as creating news ones, in response to requests from private hire drivers during a virtual meeting this Friday (Sep 25).

An existing four-car rank in Albert Road, outside the Kings Theatre, could be turned into a 24-hour rank and a new 24 hour stand could be created in Pasteur Road by Queen Alexandra Hospital.
A taxi driver, who has worked in the city for 40 years, said: 'It’s really good that Albert Road rank could be made 24 hours. It will help prevent people parking in the spaces because the fines don’t seem to be enough to deter them.
‘All these are changes we’ve asked for for a long time.’
The proposed changes are:
- Cambridge Road, south east by Union building: taxi stand to be removed.
- Edinburgh Road, south side between Stanhope Road and Commercial Road: reduce the number of cars.
- Fountain Street, feeder stand for Edinburgh Road: reduce the number of cars.
- Gunwharf Quays Service Road: remove a kerb barrier.
- Commercial Road, east side facing south from junction with Surrey Street: new six-car stand at night.
- Albert Road, south side opposite the Wedgewood Rooms: new three-car stand.
- Willis Road, city centre: new 14-car stand at night.
- Elm Grove, south side, east of Grove Road South: new two-car stand.
- Hard Interchange transport hub stand: 12-car 24 hour stand formally adopted.
- Fratton Way: reinstatement of taxi stand and feeder by Tesco.
- London Road, east side between Stubbington Avenue and Laburnum Grove, North End: existing four-car stand to be made 24 hours.
- Kingston Road, on east side facing southbound: new three-car 24 hour stand.
- The Hard, south side by slipway: new three-car 24 hour stand.
- Pasteur Road, QA Hospital: new three-car 24 hour stand.
- Albert Road, adjacent to the Kings Theatre: existing four-car stand to be made 24 hour.
