Fareham residents warned to avoid Newgate Lane as McDonald's reopening sparks traffic
MOTORISTS are being advised to avoid Newgate Lane as the reopening of the McDonald’s restaurant has sparked heavy traffic.
The drive-thru restaurant is one of a number that have reopened across the Portsmouth area today.
Long queues have also been reported in Fratton, Cosham, North Harbour and Ocean Retail Park as the fast food giant returned after closing in late March.
Fareham Police has advised residents to avoid the area around Newgate Lane.

In a post on social media they wrote: ‘I'm sure you're well aware a well-known fast food chain has opened today and it is very busy down Newgate Lane.
‘If at all possible, we would suggest that you avoid this area and wait for a few more days for it to calm down before treating yourself.’
McDonald’s has announced that there will be a number of safety measures in place for people going to McDonald’s drive-thru restaurants.
In a post on Facebook, the account wrote: ‘In order to allow for social distancing, we will have fewer employees in our kitchen and service areas.
‘To help our smaller teams, we will be offering a limited menu over reduced hours (11am to 10pm).
‘We continue to ask that you limit your spend to £25 and use contactless payment methods wherever possible.
‘Our teams are adjusting to new safety and hygiene procedures, which will help them to work safely and social distance, we appreciate your continued patience.
‘We are delighted to be returning to communities across the UK and Ireland, but it will look different and take a little longer. Please bear with us.’
The remaining drive-thru restaurants will reopen tomorrow, McDonald’s has said.
