When will Castle Street in Portchester be reopened as motorists face two-mile diversion

A two-mile diversion is currently in place.

A main road through Portchester has been closed off to motorists - and won’t be reopening anytime soon.

Over the past couple of weeks, residents will have no doubt seen that the northern end of Castle Street, connecting to the Castle Street Roundabout, has been shut to all vehicles due to works taking place.

A diversion is currently in place, redirecting traffic through White Hart Lane, up Cornaway Lane and back along the A27 - a two-mile diversion that adds roughly five minutes to journeys for Portchester residents.

Some access remains for those living in The Keep, as well as for people turning out of Assheton Court, with most of the work taking place in the northbound lane. Photographs taken at the scene show parts of the road having been pulled up, exposing the gas pipes below.

The work is being undertaken by Scotia Gas Networks (SGN), which is carrying out “gas mains renewal plus services”.

At the time of publication, the road is due to be reopened on Tuesday, September 1, once SGN has completed its renewal works.
