Why there is a short 50mph limit stretch on the M27 near Portsmouth

The M27 near Portsmouth has had 50mph limit signs up for more than a year - here is why

Many drivers may have been baffled by 50mph limit signs on the M27 near Portsmouth.

The three signs, and associated roadworks warnings, have been on the westbound stretch of the M27 between Junction 12 for Portsmouth and Junction 11 for Fareham for more than a year. They are not part of the smart motorway works several miles west, and not much activity has been in evidence on that stretch, which passes over Paulsgrove. All the lanes are open on both sides of the road.

Now National Highways has revealed the reason - and it’s one that could lead to some large-scale work on the motorway at some stage in the future.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “The 50mph speed limit is in place on the M27 between junction 11 and 12 for safety reasons due to significant damage to the parapet at Hillsley Underpass, which is located on this section, following a road traffic collision.

“From inspection, it was found that the parapet could not be repaired and requires complete replacement. Extensive surveys, testing, and assessment works have been carried out in preparation for this, with more to follow. Please note, these works have been carried out in evenings / underneath the structure and therefore not visible to passing motorists.”

The spokesperson said that there is not yet any slot for the work to take place as more surveys are needed. Any work that needs the motorway to be closed or see lanes restricted will be publicised in advance.
