M3 closed after 300 litres of diesel spilt following crash in the early hours of the morning
Oil spill results in closure
Three hundred litres of diesel has spilt across a major stretch of motorway after a heavy goods vehicle smashed into the central reservation.

At approximately 1am this morning (September 15), a large vehicle crashed into the reservation prompting the closure of the eastbound carriageway on the M3 between junction 9, Winnall Interchange, (The MIDLANDS, Newbury A34) and the Popham Junction with the A303.

As a result of the collision, the fuel tank was ruptured and approximately 300 litres of diesel spilt across the carriageway.
The vehicle was recovered at 3am and the road needs full resurfacing, with National Highways confirming the M3 is likely to remain closed through the morning peak period whilst this is completed.
The AA says: “Road closed and queueing traffic due to emergency resurfacing repairs and earlier crash on M3 Northbound from J9 A34 (Winnal roundabout / Winchester North) to J8 A303. Congestion to J10 (Winchester).”
A diversion route is in place but commuters are being advised to plan ahead this morning due to increasing delays.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has been contacted for more information.
