"Major engineering milestone" reached in M27 junction 10 upgrade project
A “major engineering milestone” has been reached in the works taking place on the M27 which will see the motorway closed until early next year.
The M27 is currently closed between junction nine (Whiteley) and junction 11 (Fareham) with work taking place to upgrade junction 10. Over the last two days, Hampshire’s first box slide was completed and now a new underpass structure has been put in place.
The stretch of motorway has been closed since Christmas Eve and is expected to reopen on Sunday, January 4 at 4am.

Hampshire County Council provided an update on the works on Saturday, December 27. A post on social media said: “A new underpass structure is now in place at the M27 J10 following the successful completion of Hampshire’s first box slide - a major engineering milestone for this flagship highways project.
From yesterday afternoon and throughout the night, specialist teams used advanced hydraulic equipment and millimetre‑accurate control to slide a 8,500 tonne concrete structure into its final position. The entire process - shown in this timelapse film - took less than 20 hours to complete. In the coming days, the embankments will be built - and the motorway surface will be replaced.
“The newly installed structure will become the underpass for a future ‘all‑moves’ junction, opening in late 2026 to improve journeys and enhance connectivity across this part of Hampshire, whilst supporting the growth of the Welborne Garden Village development.”
