Hampshire police admit 'it makes total sense' to slash speed limits on narrow and winding Fareham roads

The speed limit along a stretch of road in Fareham is set to be reduced to improve safety in light of new housing developments in the area.

Hampshire County Council has proposed a Traffic Regulation Order to introduce a new 30mph speed limit on Oakcroft Lane, Ranvilles Lane, and The Poplars, replacing the existing national speed limit currently used on parts of the route.

The changes will cover Oakcroft Lane from its junction with Ranvilles Lane to The Poplars, around 510 metres, as well as Ranvilles Lane from Farm House Close to Oakcroft Lane around 160 metres.

In addition, The Poplars will become 30mph along its entire length.

The change forms part of the planning conditions for two new residential developments on Oakcroft Lane.

The council says extending the 30mph limit along the whole route will provide greater consistency for all road users, rather than only slowing traffic near the new site access points.

According to the council, the reduced speed limit will improve safety for the increasing number of people using the road, including children and vulnerable road users.

It is also expected to encourage more walking and cycling and help create a safer and more liveable community environment.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary support the proposal, stating that with ongoing development and only a short section currently at 60mph, “it makes total sense to reduce the speed limit.”

Officers also noted that the area has seen only two crashes in recent years, both of which were linked to junctions rather than excessive speed.

Local resident Sarah Hills also backs the change. She said the road is often used as a cut-through to the bypass and can become busy at peak times.

Describing it as “narrow and winding,” she added that it can be particularly hazardous when driven at the current 60mph limit.

Mrs Hills added: “The lower speed limit, if enforced regularly, will ensure that the local community do not fall victim to a serious road incident.”
