Final closure looms in Eastern Road as Southern Water completes structural liner following weeks of sewer repairs
Eastern Road is set to close for the final time as Southern Water complete a structural liner following weeks of ongoing repair work.
The major work commenced on January 4, 2026, with closures in place on the southbound carriageway between Burrfields Road and Hayling Avenue.
The repairs were completed two weeks ahead of schedule due to the use of specialist lining technology, resulting in the busy city road fully opening again on February 14.

Drivers are now being reminded that a further night-time closure on the southbound carriageway is due to to be in place between the Burrfields Road and Hayling Avenue junctions from tomorrow night (February 20).
The closure, which will allow engineers to complete a structural liner in Swords Sands Road, will be in place between from 9pm until 5am Saturday morning (February 21). This work will mark the completion of lining the gravity main in the southern section.
George Taylor, director of wastewater operations at Southern Water, previously said: “We have successfully lined more than 1,600 metres of sewer pipe ahead of schedule. Our teams have worked day and night, with much of the job taking place below ground and out of sight, on one of Portsmouth’s most important routes.
“We fully recognise the impact of the road closure and thank everyone for their patience and understanding while these vital works were completed. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
