Disruption expected as urgent work continues on Mile End Road in Portsmouth
Urgent cabling works are continuing today on one of the main routes into Portsmouth after drivers experienced long delays yesterday.
Mile End Road, which the M275 joins onto, has partial lane closures this weekend (March 7 and 8) as Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) undertake essential work. It caused major disruption on Saturday with some people reporting wait times of over 40 minutes.
The work started on the evening Friday, March 6 with the lanes expected to reopened on the early hours of Monday, March 9. However, the work will then resume next Friday (March 13) and last the full weekend again.
A spokesperson for SSEN said: “These works are essential to repair a fault on an underground cable that helps keep power flowing safely and reliably to tens of thousands of Portsmouth’s homes and businesses.
“To minimise disruption to road users during these urgent, essential works, the northbound and southbound lanes of the A3 at Mile End Road will remain open to traffic throughout, with partial lane closures in place over these two weekends in March. “
The SSEN spokesperson said: “SSEN would like to thank residents, commuters and visitors for their patience and understanding while it carries out these emergency works to maintain Portsmouth’s power supply.”
To try to help mitigate the delays SSEN has funded additional Park and Rode services into the city.
