Crucial £2.5million project to repair Eastern Road sewage pipe delayed until January 2026

A crucial £2.5million project to repair a sewage pipe in Eastern Road has been delayed until January 2026.

The decision by Southern Water follows a site survey and means there will be no daytime lane closures on Eastern Road for the rest of this year. It was originally expected to be lead to seven weeks of lane closures southbound.

However, between now and Tuesday, December 23, there will be some night works that will require one lane closed southbound between the junction of Tangier Road and Burrfields Road, while minor works are carried out. The shared footpath and cycle route has also reopened for the rest of the year.

As previously reported by The News, the sewage pipe burst in September 2025 led to significant flooding and traffic disruption in both directions. It is the latest in a string of problems along the aging pipe along that stretch, with repairs previously having been carried out further north along Eastern Road causing major disruption in the city.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: “We are working closely with Portsmouth City Council and keeping residents and commuters informed to minimise disruption to the local community.

“The long-term £2.5m solution will strengthen Portsmouth’s pipeline, using innovative lining technology to futureproof this section of the city’s sewer network for years to come.

“We would like to thank the people of Portsmouth for their ongoing support and understanding.”
