A3(M): Emergency services respond to serious incident after man spotted on wrong side of bridge railings

Drivers faced standstill traffic and huge delays this morning due to a police incident after a man was spotted on the wrong side of bridge railings.

As a result, there were delays of more than an hour from junction 5 where it meets the A27 at Bedhampton, to junction 4 at Purbrook Way, as well as the A27 eastbound carriageway leading up to the A3(M).

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said: “Police were called at 10.02am this morning to concerns for the welfare of a man who was on the wrong side of the railings of the bridge across the A3.

“The man came down from the bridge at 11.47am and was brought to safety.”

An air ambulance was also deployed to the scene with a spokesperson confirming a critical care team, ‘consisting of a doctor and a specialist paramedic, provided treatment to a patient on scene before returning to base.’

The road has now been fully reopened but delays continue to be in place following the incident.
