One side of a Hampshire road has been closed by an overturned lorry - with a diversion now put in place

A major Hampshire A-road has been closed in one direction after a lorry overturned, and drivers are being sent on a 15-mile diversion.

The northbound side A34 is shut between the M3 junction and the A303 turn-off, and one lane is shut on the southbound side as the recovery operation takes place.

National Highways says that emergency services were on the scene. It reports current delays of 30 minutes and four miles of congestion on the approach south. Some drivers are still stuck in the northbound closure and have not moved for several hours.

National Highways says that work is taking place to free those cars.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: “Police were called at 9.38am this morning, following a collision on the northbound carriageway of the A34 near Sutton Scotney involving a lorry.

“The driver of the lorry has been taken to hospital in a serious condition. The road is currently closed while officers deal with the incident.”

A diversion route has been set up, and drivers have been asked to follow solid diamond symbols on road signs.

  • From the M3 northbound at Junction 9, continue northbound and follow to Junction 7
  • At the roundabout take the fourth exit to rejoin the M3 southbound
  • Exit at Junction 8 and join the A303 westbound, following for about six miles
  • At A34 Bullington Cross interchange, continue to a T junction, turning right and passing beneath the A303 and A34.
  • Continue and re-join the A34 northbound.
