A27: Road reopened between Emsworth and Chichester with girl taken to hospital

A major dual carriageway has been reopened with a girl rushed to hospital following a “medical incident”.

The A27 was closed in both directions between Emsworth and Chichester earlier this morning (January 26). Sussex Police officers were deployed to Southbourne following a concern for welfare report at roughly 6am, describing it as a “medical incident”.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area and find alternative routes. Traffic officers from National Highways South East also rushed to the scene.

Sussex Police confirmed the A27 was reopened at around 9.30am. The force said: “The A27 at Southbourne has now reopened following a medical incident earlier this morning. Emergency services were called over concern for a girl's welfare shortly before 5am.

“She has been taken to hospital. The road was closed in both directions while we responded to this emergency. Officers have thanked the public for their patience while we responded to this incident.”

A diversion was put in place along the A259, which saw motorists being beset with severe delays. Alternative routes were marked with symbols to aid drivers.

Traffic had to be released during the road closure, with motorists diverted off the A27. The AA Traffic Map reports that delays are slowly easing as vehicles start moving again.
