A27 carriageway will be closed this weekend as diversion route confirmed

Drivers have been urged to allow extra time for their journeys this weekend.

Motorists planning to use the A27 to get out of Portsmouth this weekend will be facing a full road closure, National Highways has warned.

Essential work to refurbish the bridges at Langstone Interchange is continuing this month - although National Highways has delayed the start to help reduce disruption for Portsmouth FC supporters.

The agency had planned weekend closures as part of the scheme but has pushed back the start time of its initial Saturday closures to 9pm, to reduce the impact on Portsmouth's home fixture on Saturday, September 5 against Cardiff City.

The eastbound carriageway at Langstone Interchange will be fully closed from 9pm on Saturday, September 5, until 6am on Monday, September 7. Motorists are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys, although the interchange roundabout will still enable people to drive around the roadworks.

The westbound carriageway will remain open, according to National Highways’ work schedule.

Katarina Saradinova, head of scheme delivery at National Highways, said: "Our programme to refurbish the Langstone Interchange bridges continues.

"We have carefully planned for key stages of work to take place overnight when the volume of traffic is less and over weekends avoiding major events in the region to minimise disruption to road users and the local community.

"We do understand the impact any carriageway closure has on traffic conditions, and I would like to remind everyone to plan ahead and allow more journey time, especially with Hayling Island being a popular destination for visitors."

The work forms part of a programme to improve the safety and lifespan of the bridges at the junction.

Drivers travelling through the area over this weekend are advised to check their route before setting off and allow additional time for their journey.
