THIS WEEK IN 1989: Former stray cats living purrfect lives

Eight wild cats who almost lost their nine lives were given the cream of lifestyles in and around a Portsmouth home and garden.

Thanks to cat-lover Caroline Charlton, of Binsteed Road, Buckland, and the two charities which came to the rescue, everything in the garden was lovely for the formerly-starved animals.

Mrs Charlton fed and encouraged the timid black mother cat, pictured, which, with four of its offspring, was scratching a living in neighbouring gardens.

She said: ‘The cats were hounded from one garden to the next and they didn’t see much human kindness.

‘They didn’t ask to be kept out in the cold and half-starved, but they were far too wild for me to domesticate.’
