42-year-old man charged following violent disorder during Eastney anti-migrant protest
He will appear in court on September 12
A 42-year-old man has been charged with violent disorder and assaulting a police officer as part of a police investigation following a protest at Eastney on Sunday, September 6.
Early this morning (Friday 11 September) 42-year-old Del Leon Somerville, of Walsingham Close in Paulsgrove, was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty.
He has subsequently been charged with both offences and has been remanded to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates Court on Saturday 12 September.
Police have been reviewing hundreds of hours’ worth of footage from different sources to identify those who committed offences during the protest, which occurred following the arrival of 120 migrants in Eastney after they were picked up by the RNLI.
A crowd of around 200 protestors gathered on Ferry Road and police officers were deployed to the area. Several police, Coastguard and Border Force vehicles were damaged during the demonstration, and a small number of officers were treated at the scene for injuries.
Investigations are still ongoing.
