Work finally begins on long-awaited £12.8 million project to replace aging Havant footbridge
The multi-million pound project will take 12 months to complete
Work has begin on a long-awaited £12.8 million project to replace the 79-year-old footbridge across the railway line in Havant.
The new bridge, which will replace the existing one at Havant Railway Station, will provide a “safer” and more “accessible” crossing once complete. Work began this morning (September 28) and is expected to take 12 months to complete with a 10-minute diversion route by foot in place throughout.
It has been a long awaited and “much-needed” upgrade with the current bridge showing signs of deterioration and needing temporary structural support to remain safe to use.

The new bridge will be twice as wide as the existing structure and feature gentler ramps to make it more accessible for cyclists, wheelchair, and mobility scooter users, as well as people travelling with prams or pushchairs.

The cost of the scheme is £12.8 million, funded through a combination of Department for Transport grant funding, developer contributions, and £2.8 million from Havant Borough Council's Community Infrastructure Levy Fund.
Havant Railway Station will be accessible throughout the construction.
