Two new pedestrian crossings set for Southsea - and car park to be reopened
NEW temporary pedestrian crossings will be installed in Southsea to encourage walking.
Two signal-controlled crossings will be implemented along Eastern Parade to help pedestrians safely access the seafront as part of a wider bid to help social distancing and green travel amid the pandemic.

Some car parking will be suspended as a result but Canoe Lake car park will be opened to compensate for the loss of spaces.
Councillor Lynne Stagg, Portsmouth City Council’s travel boss, said: ‘It is important we do all we can during the pandemic to keep people safe as they travel and this is one of many changes that are taking place, including making additional space where it is available on our high streets, creating additional cycling space in the city centre that connects our current cycle routes. There is more to do and I look forward to sharing this with you soon.’
It is planned the cost of the crossings will come from part of a £192,000 active travel grant from government. Initially plans had been made for two toucan crossings (for pedestrians and bikes) on the seafront but this was changed.
The temporary crossings will be located between Helena Road and Bruce Road, and between Burbidge Grove and Brading Avenue
Work to create the crossings will begin on June 29 and they will become operational as soon as work is completed.
