High hopes iconic Sails of the South could be restored to its full glory for centenary celebrations
Portsmouth’s ‘Sails of the South’ could be restored to their full glory as the city continues its centenary celebrations.
Preparations are underway for the refurbishment of the Tri-Sails, which stands between the M275 carriageways at the entrance to the city, with some initial refurbishment work expected to begin in the next few months.
The 43m (141ft) tensioned structure, was largely put in place on site at the end of the year 2000, with the 24 lights which illuminated it then switched on in March 2001. However vandalism and wear and tear has resulted in missing panels and years of no lighting, despite some repairs being carried out in 2024.

But it is hoped that the landmark can be brought back to life again, with 2026 marking the 100th anniversary of Portsmouth becoming a city. (Watch a video from the launch of the Portsmouth100 event embedded in this story)
A Portsmouth City Council spokesperson told The News that it has already carried out some initial work towards further repairs.
They said: "We've recently carried out some survey work on the Tri-Sails, also known as the 'Sails of the South', as part of preparations to refurbish the structure in the coming months.
“We are still investigating the feasibility of including lighting in the refurbishment".
