Residents '˜disappointed' after councillor approve for flat complex in Portchester
RESIDENTS and councillors have expressed their disappointment' after 17 flats for elderly people in Portchester were approved.
Fareham Borough Council’s planning committee greenlit Merjen Engineering’s plans on Wednesday to knock down its derelict engineering building in Station Road to build the complex.

Concerns were raised at the meeting about the loss of green space and the location of the proposed building as it is by the busy Castle Street Roundabout.
However, the committee decided to grant permission for the site by a vote of seven to one in favour.

Justine Allingham, of Station Road, Portchester, said: ‘I’m completely gutted about it.
‘There will be a hidden access road to the development which lorries will end up reversing into so it will be so dangerous.
‘I’m just thinking that it will have a tremendous impact on the roundabout and the surrounding area.
Shaun Cunningham, Fareham borough councillor for Portchester East, gave a deputation at the meeting at the Civic Offices in Fareham.

He said: ‘From my discussions with residents, I have found overwhelmingly that they are not impressed with these proposals.’
Speaking after the decision, he added: ‘I do not think they listened to a word I said.
‘Things like this fuel residents’ thoughts that their views are not listened to.’
Councillor Keith Evans, supported the proposals during the meeting.
He said: ‘Personally, I think it will add to the view as people approach the district.
‘It’s visually attractive.
Councillor Nick Walker, chairman of the committee said: ‘I think its a fantastic design. Building on this site was always going to be a tricky one. However, I believe it to be a good scheme.’
The existing building could be demolished later this year.
