Reform Party sends well-wishes to Portsmouth councillor who had finger 'amputated' while on campaign trail

Cllr Matthew Cordy was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital for treatment after a freak incident on the campaign trail.

A Portsmouth councillor is at home recovering after his finger was severed while campaigning for the upcoming elections.

Over the weekend, Cllr Matthew Cordy was involved in an incident while leafletting in the St Thomas ward, Reform UK has confirmed. An encounter with a letter box left the middle finger on his right hand ‘degloved’, with the skin and tissue ripped away.

According to Reform, Cllr Cordy’s nail and top section of his finger came off, and he was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham for treatment.

A spokesperson said: “We wish Matthew a speedy recovery and thank him for his dedication campaigning for his community.”

Cllr Cordy is awaiting a consultation, a party spokesperson added, and could have more of his finger surgically removed. He is not listed as a candidate for this year’s elections.

In a post on X, which has since been deleted, fellow Portsmouth Reform councillor, George Madgwick, said: “Portsmouth Reform UK Cllr, Matthew Cordy, was involved in a freak incident whilst out campaigning.

“His finger was amputated on a sharp letter box and unfortunately despite best efforts from hospital it couldn’t be saved.”
