£252,000 improvements approved to improve walking and cycling route between Denmead and Waterlooville

Work to create a new walking and cycling route has been approved aimed at improving safety and connectivity between Denmead and Waterlooville.

Hampshire County Council has approved £252,000 for the project which will focus on upgrading the Milton Road roundabout crossing in Waterlooville, replacing the existing uncontrolled crossing with a parallel crossing designed to give priority to pedestrians and cyclists.

A new shared-use path will also be built to link the crossing more directly to an existing puffin crossing on Hambledon Road.

Additional works include widening and upgrading a narrow and fragmented shared path near the Hambledon Road service road, along with improved connections near Aston Road to better separate pedestrians and cyclists.

Council papers say current provision is “fragmented and unattractive”, forcing cyclists into short carriageway sections or narrow, indirect paths, while pedestrians face uneven surfaces and poor connections between key points.

Pedestrians also face narrow pavements, uneven surfaces and limited direct connections between key points, particularly between Milton Road and the existing crossing facilities.

Officers say the changes are intended to address these issues and encourage more short local journeys to be made on foot or by bike rather than by car.

Construction is expected to begin in June 2026, with completion anticipated by August 2026, followed by a review in summer 2027.
