During the meeting, councillors will put forward nominations before casting their votes to determine who will serve as Lord Mayor for the coming year. Once elected, the new Lord Mayor will officially assume office and announce the charitable causes they will support during their term.

The title of Lord Mayor is not a political position, and does not come with any legislative powers; instead, it’s a ceremonial position, historically becoming the face of the city council a various functions.

The ceremony includes the traditional presentation of the keys to the city and the Portsmouth sword, both of which represent the city’s heritage and its enduring connection with the Royal Navy.

The mayor-making ceremony also provides an opportunity to celebrate outstanding contributions to the community. Civic awards will be presented by the Lord Mayor to individuals and organisations whose efforts have made a meaningful difference to Portsmouth and its residents.

Tickets to watch the mayor-making ceremony in-person are issued on a first come, first served basis - and are completely free.
