Portsmouth pubs ready for England's late-night world cup showdown
Government approves 5am pub opening as Portsmouth prepares for England's World Cup.
These are the Portsmouth pubs and bars that were lined up to host England fans before the Government allowed all venues to stay open until 5am.
Pubs, bars, shops and fast food outlets in the city submitted applications to extend their opening hours ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 last-16 match.
The match kicks off at 1am on Monday, July 6. Before the government’s announcement, venues across Portsmouth had sought temporary event notices to continue serving customers throughout the game.
However, licensed premises in England and Wales will now be able to stay open until 5am, allowing fans to “come together” and support the Three Lions.
The decision uses powers available to the Home Secretary to relax licensing hours nationally, removing the need for venues to apply to extend opening and alcohol sales hours.
England topped their group before beating DR Congo 2-1 in the first knockout round. They will now face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with the winners progressing to the quarter-finals.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “Football might be coming home, but we’re making sure fans don’t have to.
“Pubs staying open till the final whistle is good news for supporters and good news for the pubs and venues that bring our communities together. The whole country will be backing the team. Come on England!”
Before the Government’s announcement, around 30 premises had submitted temporary event notices to Portsmouth City Council.
A council spokesperson said: “We’re encouraging Portsmouth pubs and bars to stay open late for supporters to watch the next England football match kicking off early on Monday morning. So far around 30 local premises have given us temporary event notices which have been accepted.”
