It also symbolises a promise to never commit, excuse, or remain silent about male violence against women.

The White Ribbon flag was raised in Guildhall Square today (Thursday 25 November), with council members and officers joined by partners from organisations across the city.

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of the Council, said: “As a White Ribbon accredited Council, we’re committed to changing attitudes and behaviours that enable violence against women and girls.

“Everyone can help by raising awareness and calling out abusive behaviour. I encourage men and boys in Portsmouth to make the white ribbon promise to never commit, excuse, or stay silent about violence against women and girls.”

Councillor Charlotte Gerada, said it was an “honour” to attend the flag-raising.

“This important day reminds us all that we have a role to play in preventing violence against women and children. It starts with speaking up and challenging abuse, aggression and violence when we see it.

She said she’s proud to have campaigned with former councillor Kirsty Mellor to affiliate the council with the White Ribbon campaign in 2021.

“It shows what can be achieved when we work together for the common good,” she added.

Residents are encouraged to make the White Ribbon promise at whiteribbon.org.uk/promise.
