Call for Portsmouth gritters to be given funny names in competition - how to submit your suggestions
Hilarious names are being sought for four gritters that will keep the roads safe and clear this winter.
Officials from Portsmouth City Council and Colas are calling on the public to send them their best ideas. Colas' winter maintenance programme helps ensure safe journeys across the city in the event of ice or snow.
Councillor Peter Candlish, cabinet member for transport, said: “This gritter naming competition helps to highlight the vital work done to keep the city's roads safe for everyone during the winter. So please make your suggestions, and we'll put the best or funniest ideas on gritters you'll see out and about on Portsmouth's roads this winter.”

Colas' depot in Farlington has a salt barn which is kept stocked up and can hold 850 tonnes of salt. The priority of the road programme is to ensure all transport routes in and out of the city, including major bus routes and access to places such as hospitals, schools, train and bus stations, and shopping centres, are clear and accessible.
Cllr Candlish will choose the winning names, which will be announced in the new year and displayed on the vehicles throughout the city. You can nominate a name for one of the four gritters emailing [email protected].
People can also submit ideas on Portsmouth City Council social media posts on Facebook, Instagram, or X. Further details on the winter maintenance programme can be found here.
