Portsmouth businesses: last chance to grab match fund cash
Local businesses in Portsmouth have one last chance to apply for the Portsmouth Match Fund, a grant designed to help start-ups and small businesses grow.
Since 2023, the fund has pumped £140,000 into 46 local businesses, helping them launch, expand, and create jobs. In 2025 alone, 24 businesses received over £75,000, matched by their own investment.

Past winners include A Little Bit Extra, Casemates Studios, Southsea Play Café, Blossom Boutique, Quick Dynamics, Alexandra Sports, and The Southsea Deli.
The fund, backed by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, offers 20-50 per cent funding, or £1,500 to £4,000, for growth or start-up projects. The money can be used for websites, e-commerce, products, equipment, or staff training.
Fratton bakery ‘A Little Bit Extra’ used the grant to buy a second cookie balling machine, boosting production and creating jobs.
Owner Caron Howe said: “The Portsmouth Match Fund helped us scale up and meet growing demand.
“With the second cookie machine our turnover has increased significantly. We’ve created three new baker roles and a business development manager, moved into a larger bakery at Victory Business Centre, and are ready for even more growth in 2026.”
Council leader Cllr Steve Pitt, in charge of economic development, said: “The Portsmouth Match Fund has made a real difference to local businesses. This final round is a fantastic opportunity for startups and small businesses to secure funding and grow.
“By working together, we can strengthen Portsmouth’s economy and create jobs. If you haven’t applied yet, now is the time.”
Applications close Sunday 25 January 2026. Businesses can apply on the council website on: www.portsmouth.gov.uk/services/business/business-support/business-funding-and-financial-support/portsmouth-match-fund/
