Plans for new venue to replace Ferneham Hall in Fareham are approved in virtual planning meeting
PLANS to transform a theatre have been approved via a council’s first ever virtual planning meeting.
Fareham Borough Councillors met over video call and gave the green light for a project to replace Ferneham Hall and transform a new building into a community, arts and entertainment venue, offering something for everyone.

It was agreed that the planning committee will have the final say on external cladding and planting.
Executive member for leisure and community at Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Sue Bell, said: ‘I’m pleased that, despite the challenges we are facing, this project can still move ahead.
‘This new facility will be a great asset to Fareham, replacing the current one which has become tired and dated. While we can’t enjoy arts and entertainment activities at the moment, when we can do these things again, residents can look forward to a fantastic new venue in the town centre.’
Chairman of the planning committee, Councillor Nick Walker, said: ‘I’m pleased that we have held this virtual meeting, in line with government guidance that planning decisions should still be taken during this time.
‘This is a good example of how we have adapted our practices to allow council business to continue, while keeping everyone safe.’
The venue closed in January and will be shut for two years while the redevelopment takes place. The council offered to help staff find new roles.
The purpose-built centre was opened by the Duchess of Kent on April 23, 1982, and stars including Lenny Henry, Jack Dee and Jo Brand all started their careers with a visit to the venue.
