Old Royal Hospital Haslar in Gosport to become 140 homes - as care home and hotel plans also approved
A care home, a hotel and 140 new homes will officially be built on the old Royal Hospital Haslar site in Gosport.
Gosport Borough Council has given the green light for the old hospital site to be redeveloped, with 140 new homes at the heart of the project.
The hospital, which was the final military hospital operating in the UK, was closed in 2009 and sold by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to developers for £3m. All services were transferred to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.

Work to redevelop the land has already begun, with Haslar Developments Limited receiving approval for 74 flats at the north eastern corner of the former main hospital building from Gosport Borough Council’s regulatory board in February last year.
This latest planning application concerns the remaining part of the site, with almost 17,000 square metres of commercial floorspace - including a hotel, offices, retail and a heritage centre - plus a care home and the 140 residential dwellings.
Under the proposals, the historic architecture will be preserved, and while new buildings will be constructed at Haslar, many of the existing ones are simply going to be converted.

For example, the old officer patient’s block will be turned into 20 residential properties, the heritage centre will be inside the former laundry building, and the old surgeon’s and nursing sisters’ quarters will provide the basis for the new hotel.
Outline planning permission for Haslar was granted back in 2014, with some redevelopment projects already being completed.
Work on parts of the main hospital building, plus Canada and G blocks, finished a while ago, and other buildings - such as the old gym, and chapel - are actually still up for sale.
