No. 18 bus hits record ridership after upgrades
Portsmouth’s 18 bus route is enjoying record growth, with passenger numbers climbing fast after major upgrades earlier this year.
The service was improved in April 2025 using funding from the Portsmouth Bus Service Improvement Plan. Weekday buses now run every 20 minutes, and the route has been extended to Clarence Pier, Hovertravel and the Castle Road shopping area.

The changes have made it easier for people to reach the seafront and Southsea’s independent shops.
Passenger numbers are now on track to hit around 750,000 this year – more than 30 per cent up on last year, mainly driven by fare-paying passengers. September 2025 was the busiest month on record, helped by the city’s free bus travel promotion.
Councillor Peter Candlish, cabinet member for transport, said: “The growth of the 18 route shows how investing in public transport benefits everyone. More people are choosing the bus, which reduces congestion, eases parking pressures and improves air quality.
“This extension reflects our determination to make travel across Portsmouth easier and better for everyone, and we’re doing it in a joined-up way, linking buses with steadily improving walking and cycling infrastructure, and with key shopping and entertainment destinations like Castle Rd and Clarence Pier.”
He said the success forms part of the council’s long-term transport strategy, aimed at making it easier for people to move around the city while cutting congestion and improving air quality.
The 18 now links several places where the council is investing heavily, including Clarence Pier and Castle Road, where public-realm improvements are under way with support from local residents and businesses. Work in the area includes two new bus stops on Southsea Terrace, better walking and cycling routes, and new EV charge points.
Marc Reddy, managing director at Stagecoach South, said: “We’re thrilled to see such strong growth on the 18 route, reflecting how much our customers value frequent, reliable, and convenient bus services.
“The recent improvements, supported by Portsmouth City Council, are making it easier for people to connect with key destinations across the city, from Southsea’s seafront to local shops.
“This record ridership shows that when we invest in better bus services, more people choose to leave the car at home, supporting a greener, more sustainable Portsmouth.”
