New parking limits proposed for Tangier Road
New parking restrictions on Tangier Road could soon be approved, with residents split over the plans.
Portsmouth City Council will discuss the proposals on 13 November, aiming to solve long-term parking problems in Baffins. Complaints have focused on taxis and private hire cars left for long periods on an unrestricted stretch between Stanley Avenue and Eastern Road.

A council report says the new time-limited bays and waiting rules would discourage all-day parking while keeping access to The Great Salterns Field and the softball field.
The plans include new “No Waiting at Any Time” zones on the north side of Tangier Road, linking existing restrictions near the Great Salterns car park, the Children’s Home, and the bus stop outside Portsmouth College. Similar rules would apply on the south side from number 261 eastwards for 125m.
Further “No Waiting” restrictions are proposed from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, on parts of the north side east of the Children’s Home access road, and on the south side east of Sword Sands Path up to the bus stop.
Time-limited bays allowing up to four hours’ stay, with no return within four hours, would also be added between 8am and 6pm daily. These would be on the north side, 20 metres east of the Great Salterns car park entrance for 63m, and on the south side, west of the Sword Sands Bowling Green car park for 28m.
A local resident and Vikings softball team member said they “welcome” the plans to “better manage” parking. They said the four-hour limit is “reasonable” as each game lasts about four hours “including set up and tidy up”. However, they asked if longer stays could be allowed for day-long events held three or four times a year.
A Solent Softball League representative objected, saying the no-waiting zones would restrict access. They noted there are “eight teams playing and training there, plus the visiting teams (from Chichester, Southampton and Fareham)”.
Another resident thanked the council for acting, saying “dumping of taxis” has continued since 2020. “I walk the road regularly and these cars are not moved day in, day out.”
