A migrant boat is in the Channel after leaving France - politicians demand answers about whether it is headed to Hampshire

Another boat of migrants is said to be heading to Hampshire from France.

Another boat of asylum seekers is reportedly heading toward England - but there is no official clue yet whether it will be landed in Hampshire.

The French boat Abeille Liberte, which accompanied a boat that was scheduled to be landed at Fort Blockhouse in Gosport on September 22 before being taken to Dover instead, is making its way across the Channel.

Local politicians have said they are aware of the situation - and that they are trying to find out more details. Several police vehicles have been spotted at Fareham Reach.

In a Facebook post, Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage said: “I am aware of reports of a migrant boat crossing from Normandy towards the south coast of the UK.

“I have contacted the Home Office Border Security Minister [Anna Turley] and requested an urgent update. At present, there is nothing to suggest that the boat will be landing in Gosport. Understandably, local police will be making preparations should that situation change.

“I am working closely with Gosport Borough Council Leader Cllr Zoe Huggins BEM and Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones for Mayor, and we will update residents as soon as we know more.”

Hampshire’s Reform leader George Madgwick posted: “Urgh. ANOTHER boat is heading to Hampshire. I’ve just been alerted that a boat left Normandy in the early hours of this morning. I was hoping it would be diverted to Kent but as I type this it’s still heading towards IOW / Portsmouth / Gosport area.

“It’s hours off yet. Let’s hope the people who make the docking decision realise this IS NOT a place we have happy for them to dock. Last time our community roared and said no and they turned it away. Let’s keep an eye today as the hours pass.”

On September 22 a large crowd gathered in Gosport to protest about the use of Fort Blockhouse as a venue to bring in migrants. Six people were arrested and three have been charged with disorder. Police had been brought in from other areas to deal with the situation and coaches were lined up at Fort Blockhouse ready to take the asylum seekers were they to be landed there. Instead a Border Force cutter took them to Dover - which remains the only official landing site in England. Any asylum seekers which land in Hampshire would still be taken to Manston in Kent for processing.

The government has told Portsmouth City Council that neither Portsmouth nor its port is due to be “a routine or designated location for small boat disembarkations”, but added that it cannot offer an “absolute guarantee excluding any particular location in every conceivable circumstance where life might be at risk”. There has been no mention made about what role Gosport could play, in addition to the Haslar Immigration Removal Centre.

The News has also argued that this stretch of the south coast, Portsmouth, Gosport and Hayling Island, are all wholly unsuitable for migrant disembarkations.
