Long-broken Falkland Gardens fountain in Gosport set to be restored

Plans to restore a long-broken fountain in Gosport have been approved, with thousands of pounds set to be invested.

Gosport Borough Council has approved plans to spend £85,000 on restoring the long-dormant Falkland Gardens fountain, which has been out of action for several years.

The funding, drawn from the council’s local regeneration budget, will support a full refurbishment of the prominent feature. Officials say much of the fountain’s mechanical and filtration equipment has reached the end of its operational life and requires replacement.

The estimated cost of the project is around £85,000. Of this, approximately £50,000 is allocated to the main refurbishment works, £10,000 to rendering and tiling, and up to £25,000 for enabling works and contingency.

The works will include lifting and modifying the existing stainless-steel basin and sculpture, removing outdated plant and pipework, and installing a new water treatment system.

The upgraded system will feature modern pumps, a UV steriliser and chlorine dosing equipment designed to meet current health and safety standards.

Council documents state the improvements will enhance reliability, water quality management and long-term maintainability.

While elements of the structure may be retained, the overhaul will effectively modernise the fountain’s recirculating system and associated infrastructure.

Once completed, the feature will also require ongoing specialist maintenance, including regular legionella testing, to ensure it remains safe and compliant.

This is expected to involve fortnightly maintenance visits at an estimated annual cost of around £10,000, funded from existing revenue budgets.

The fountain is regarded as a key focal point within the park and a significant feature for residents.

Council leader Peter Chegwyn welcomed the decision, describing the restoration as a positive step for the area.

He said: “I’m delighted that Gosport Council has been able to secure funding for the restoration of the Falkland Gardens fountain.

“This is a prominent feature in Falkland Gardens of great sentimental value to Gosport residents, especially those who lost loved ones during the Falklands conflict in 1982. Restoration works will start this summer and will be completed before the end of the year.”
