Storm Darragh: Huge tree which snapped in Kingston Cemetery will be removed later this week

A large tree which snapped at its base and fall over in a Portsmouth cemetery as a result of Storm Darragh will be cleared from the site later in the week.

The tree has fallen onto a number of headstones at Kingston Cemetery as a result of the weekend’s strong winds with many of them being damaged. Portsmouth City Council official have now confirmed the tree, towards the northern end of the site, will be removed later this week - and replaced.

A spokesperson for Portsmouth City Council said: “The tree was attended by our contractors out of hours team on the day the tree fell, and it was noted that the tree was not blocking any footways and was safe as it was on the ground. Our contractors are currently working through the weekends emergency call outs and will return this week to clear this tree, the tree will then be replaced.”

The council also added that the tree it is regularly inspected, with a programme in place to inspect every tree in the city on a 3-4 year regime. Any essential works which are identified during the inspections are then actioned.
