Demolition work begins at "dilapidated" Gosport Police Station with "extensive renovation" planned - changes

Demolition work has begun at Gosport Police Station amid plans to transform and reopen the site.

Planning permission was granted earlier this year to demolish the Western Wing of the former police building fronting Thorngate Way in South Street. Gosport Police Station closed in 2016 and will be completely revamped in a multi-million project to bring it back to life.

Police and Crime Commissioner, Donna Jones, said: “I’m delighted to see work finally get underway. This building is hugely dilapidated and in need of extensive renovation so a lot of time and energy has gone into the planning and execution of this much anticipated project. I’m thrilled to see the builders making a start on breathing new life into this station and restoring it to its former glory.”

The old section houses are being demolished to create more parking space for police vehicles, enabling officers to respond quickly to any incidents in the area. The main building will be left standing, but will be fully refurbished. A new front counter and welcoming space for visitors will be among the new changes. Other amenities being fitted include one-to-one rooms, locker rooms, resources rooms, interview rooms, and a kitchen/staff room.

Various policing teams will be housed at the site once it’s completed. This includes Neighbourhood Policing, CID and District Policing Teams.

“These renovations not only ensure members of the public have access to a front counter, they will provide our officers and staff with a better work environment to enable them to do their jobs properly and continue delivering great results for the people of Gosport,” Ms Jones said.

She added: “We’ve already seen the big difference these front desks have made to our communities, making people feel safer and offering reassurance that police officers are on hand to support victims, catch criminals and get them off our streets.” The project will run throughout 2026.
