Former dog-friendly café in Highland Road could become flats

Plans to transform the former dog-friendly Hideaway Café on Highland Road into flats have been submitted to planners.

Various applications have been lodged with Portsmouth City Council to convert the former café into three ground-floor flats.

The apartments would each have one bedroom, along with their own courtyard, storage and bin facilities.

Planning documents state: “The property currently includes a ground floor retail unit with residential accommodation at first floor level. Highland Road is made up of a mix of retail, service and residential uses, typical of a local commercial area within Southsea.

“The surrounding buildings display a variety of shopfront designs and residential conversions.

“The proposed alterations are modest and are not expected to result in any adverse impacts on the character of the surrounding area.

“The shopfront alterations will remain consistent with the varied commercial frontages found along Highland Road, while the rear extensions will be largely screened from public view.”

The property currently has no parking spaces, and the applicant, Pompey Properties Limited, is not proposing to provide any.

In September last year, the Hideaway Café closed its doors after nearly two years of trading.

The café offered a breakfast and lunch menu, as well as puppuccinos for dogs, and had plans to introduce a grooming salon and a photography studio. It also hosted community events, including wine tastings, wreath-making and bauble-making workshops.
