First major step taken in controversial Criterion project to bring for former cinema back into use

The first major steps have been taken over the £1.4million project to bring the derelict Criterion back into use.

Tenders have been invited for both the removal of asbestos from the building in Forton Road, Gosport, and for repairs to the roof to make it safe again for other works to begin. The announcements as to who these have been awarded the contracts are expected on December 23 for the asbestos, and January 13 for the roof.

Work is then expected to begin in February, with an estimated completion time of around six weeks. This will pave the way for the reuse of the building which was a cinema and theatre until 1968, and then a bingo hall until its closure in 2020.

A spokesperson for Gosport Borough Council confirmed: “The council aims to have both work streams running concurrently, subject to advice from the successful contractors on whether it is feasible.”

As previously reported by The News, the Criterion was bought by the council in 2022 as it wanted to create a new entertainment venue for the benefit of the local community.

The first phase of the restoration will transform the building’s annexe into a vibrant arts-led community café was set to open in March 2026. The original plans were to open the whole of the ground floor as a new cinema, theatre and live entertainment venue for more than 250 people.

However critics have been increasingly vocal about the projects costs and benefit to the community.
