First Hindu temple proposed for Portsmouth on former pub site

A derelict site in Portsmouth could be transformed

The derelict site of a Portsmouth pub could be transformed into a Hindu temple and community centre.

Residents in the Milton area have received leaflets outlining proposals to redevelop the site of the former Mr Pickwick’s pub, which closed in 2017 and was damaged by a fire in 2022 before it was demolished.

The proposal, being put forward by Agenda 21 Architects on behalf of Agni Properties Limited, would see the site at 142 Milton Road transformed.

According to the leaflet, which aims to consult residents ahead of a formal planning application, the development would create a “vibrant community hall and temple” that would be “open to all, irrespective of their faith”.

“The building will be used for teaching children cultural and artistic activities such as religious studies, music and dance as all of these are interwoven with the Hindu religion and also elderly people can use the place to meditate and for community gathering”.

The leaflet adds that the development would have a “positive impact” on the local community by providing “the first Hindu temple in Portsmouth” while bringing added “vibrancy” to Milton Road.

The proposals have been submitted by the London-based architectural practice on behalf of its client, Cosham-based Agni Properties Limited.

The plans coincide with a separate proposal from the Portsmouth Indian Community, which recently held a launch event for its own vision of establishing a Hindu temple in the city.

Chairperson of the group, Jatin B Patel, said: “Our proposed Temple will be a place for all Hindu people irrespective of their faith or culture. We will have all the gods for the devotees of the Hindu people to come and worship.

“It will be open to anyone wishing to come and celebrate our religious events or prayers. We will be working very closely with the Bengal and Kerala group as one group to run the temple.

“This will bring us very close as a united front in order to have a place for worship and cultural events.

“We are working very closely with Portsmouth City Council for a suitable site.”

Hinduism is the world’s oldest major religion, originating in India more than 4,000 years ago. It has no single founder and encompasses diverse beliefs, worship and traditions centred on concepts including dharma, karma, reincarnation and spiritual liberation.

Agenda 21 Architects was approached for comment.

Its public consultation has already begun and runs until 6 July. Residents can submit feedback by emailing [email protected] or calling 020 7687 6001.
