Councils move bin collections earlier to protect crews from hot weather
Portsmouth, Gosport, Havant and Fareham councils have changed their bin collection times
Bin collections will start earlier than usual across Portsmouth, Havant, Fareham and Gosport as councils seek to protect crews from the hot weather.
Portsmouth City Council has confirmed it is bringing forward collection times to reduce the time staff spend working in the highest temperatures.
A council spokesperson said: “We have been getting the crews in early over the last two weeks with a start time of 05:15 due to the hot weather.
“We still intend to carry this through until the end of next week (17th) to give the crews a break from any extreme heat later in the day.
“Residents will need to make sure their bins are out by 06:00.”
Other councils across south Hampshire have announced similar measures.
A Havant Borough Council spokesperson said: “Our waste, recycling and garden waste bin collections are continuing as normal, with no changes to collection times.
“From next week, food waste collections for residents living in the food waste pilot scheme areas are starting from 6am, earlier than normal.
“We kindly ask residents who are part of the food waste pilot to present their food waste bins the evening before their scheduled collection day so they are ready for collection from 6am.
“For more information about the pilot food waste collection service see our website www.havant.gov.uk/foodwaste.”
Gosport Borough Council has also brought collections forward by an hour for the rest of the week.
A spokesperson said: “Please leave your household waste out on your normal day – and a reminder to please have your bins out by 6am because we are operating an earlier collection service so staff can avoid the hottest part of the day.”
Fareham Borough Council said waste crews will also begin collections earlier today (9 July) and on Friday, this could continue into next week if the heat persists.
