Unanimous support for new nine-bed HMO above high street shops as 'real benefits' promised
Plans for new accommodation in a town centre have been given the green light.
The development, earmarked for trainee engineers, will be set above existing shops on Gosport’s High Street.
The building at 135 High Street will be converted into a nine-bedroom House of Multiple Occupation (HMO) after plans were unanimously approved by Gosport Borough Council’s regulatory board.

Applicant David Winzar of Winzar Holdings submitted the plans, which include converting the upper floors and part of the ground floor, along with front and rear extensions. The existing ground floor shop units will remain in place.
Councillor Lesley Meenaghan, who represents Harbourside and Town, spoke in support of the scheme during the regulatory board meeting on January 28.
She said: “David Winzar is Gosport born and bred. He currently operates HMO’s that provide high quality accommodation for Gosport adults with learning disabilities, and he works with local care communities.
“He plans to continue a community-focused approach at 135 High Street.
“He is in discussions with BAE Systems at Portsmouth Dockyard for housing their engineers.
“This would be the first time BAE has considered accommodation over in Gosport.”

She said: “I believe this would bring real benefits.
“Increasing the use of Gosport Ferry and more custom for our struggling High Street.”
The statement said: “Each room will have an ensuite bathroom and a decent view, personal storage, and access to shared laundry.”
“Modernisation of the front includes longer windows and a mix of brick and contemporary grey cladding panels to reflect a modern aesthetic.”
Other improvements will see the addition of bin and cycle storage, with two parking spaces provided at the front of the building.
A new pedestrian route from Thorngate Way to the rear of the property is also planned.
Councillors unanimously approved the application under reference 25/00214/FULL.
