Council issues scam warning after fake parking fine texts

Motorists are being warned the look out for scammers

Motorists are being warned to watch out for scam texts demanding payment for parking fines.

Fareham Borough Council said some people living in the borough have received messages from fraudsters impersonating a debt collection company, CCS Collect.

The messages are requesting payment for alleged penalty charge notices (PCNs). The council has clarified that CCS Collect does not deal with PCN debts for Fareham.

In a post on Facebook, the local authority said: “We have been informed by the parking and enforcement team that Fareham residents have been in receipt of text messages from fraudsters impersonating a legitimate debt collection organisation called CCS Collect, requesting payment for fictitious/non-existent PCN notices.

“It should be noted that CCS Collect do not collect debts regarding PCNs.”

Residents who are unsure about the legitimacy of any contact regarding parking fines are being encouraged to call the council on 01329 236100 before responding.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a scam is asked to report it to the council on the same number and to the police on 101.
