Accessibility set to be improved at Clanfield Observatory thanks to key project

Councillor grants expand horizons at Clanfield Observatory

Accessibility is set to be improved at the Clanfield Observatory, with a key project taking a step forward.

Five East Hampshire District Councillors have donated grant money towards a scheme which includes the installation of a new fully accessible disabled toilet extension. This will remove a significant barrier and help ensure everyone can take part in events and activities.

The observatory welcomes thousands of people each year, including school groups, university students, families, astronomy enthusiasts and first-time visitors eager to explore the wonders of the night sky. However, current facilities can limit access for some people.

The project has received £6,000 in councillor grant funding, including £2,000 from Cllr Sara Schillemore, £500 from Cllr Chris Hatter, £500 from Cllr James Hogan, £2,000 from Cllr John Smart and £1,000 from Cllr David Evans.

Every EHDC councillor has a budget of £7,000 to support local voluntary and not-for-profit organisations that benefit their ward.

Richard Judd, President of the Hampshire Astronomical Group, said: “For decades, the Clanfield Observatory has worked to be a welcoming place for everyone who shares our passion for astronomy.

"This project is about much more than a building upgrade. It reflects our commitment to making the observatory accessible to all and ensuring that every visitor can enjoy and participate in what we offer.

“We are profoundly grateful for the support from local councillors. Their contributions bring us significantly closer to delivering facilities that will benefit visitors for many years to come.”

The Hampshire Astronomical Group hopes the improvements will ensure more people can enjoy astronomy and experience the night sky, regardless of their individual needs.
