Police in Portsmouth arrest two people after checking up on Kingston Crescent home's partial closure order

Two people were arrested when police dropped into a house to check that a closure order was being heeded.

Just before 12.30pm today, officers were carrying out a routine check at a property subject to a partial closure order, said a Hampshire Constabulary spokesman. He said that during the check, “they found individuals inside who were not permitted to be there under the terms of the order”.

While officers attempted to remove the people, a man became aggressive towards them.

A 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting entry to premises in contravention of a closure order, common assault of an emergency worker, and racially or religiously aggravated harassment.

A 70-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting entry to premises in contravention of a closure order. They are in custody.

The closure order was made, say police, because of “repeated anti-social behaviour causing fear, distress and intimidation to the local community.”

The spokesman added: “This included disorder inside and outside the address, excessive noise and shouting, and instances of local residents being subjected to verbal abuse late at night and into the early hours of the morning.

“In addition, litter such as bottles and cigarette butts were left lying around and rubbish was reportedly dumped in neighbours’ gardens.

“Despite repeated police attendance and interventions including making arrests, the occupants continued to allow disruptive individuals to use the premises and behave in this way, leaving residents feeling powerless and fearful for their safety.”
