We Are Pompey: 'Portsmouth is a lovely place' as Steve backs the city of culture bid
Meet the people backing Portsmouth’s City of Culture Bid
Portsmouth is bidding to become the 2029 City of Culture.
Here we meet one of the people in the city backing the bid - and find out why Portsmouth is so special to them.
Steve Kingsley - entertainment business owner

Steve is well known across the city for his work in the entertainment sector.
He ran the popular nightclub Kingsley’s in Osborne Road, Southsea, and restaurant Carter and Co, formerly the Italian Bar and Grill in Great Southsea.
Kingsley’s was founded by Steve in 2008 and closed in 2022 after becoming one of the most popular bars and clubs in the city.
He is well-known for his DJ work, having played at venues in the city and along the south coast for many years.
Why Steve is backing the bid
Steve said the people of Portsmouth are what makes the city so special, with him enjoying meeting so many locals as part of his work.
He said: “I’ve been in the entertainment business for a long time and have enjoyed every single minute of it because the people of Portsmouth make it easy. It’s been a pleasure to do it.
“It didn’t feel like a job because the people just enjoy it…the music, the fun.”
Steve said the community spirit and memories of raising his family in the city and its location are also important aspects about what makes the city special.
“Bringing up my family in Portsmouth, walking along the seafront, the country. I know it sounds a bit corny but it's a lovely place,” he said.
Portsmouth in three words: A lovely place
